Anka Fauer was born on October 2, 1934 in Vienna, Austria. She was the fifth of six children. Her father was a dentist and her mother was a homemaker. Anka attended a grammar school in Vienna before going on to study medicine at the University of Vienna. After completing her medical degree, she began her neurosurgery residency at the University of Innsbruck in Austria.

She soon made significant contributions to neurosurgery by developing new techniques for repairing damage to the brain and spinal cord. One of her most notable innovations was the use of microsurgical techniques to repair large areas of brain damage.
She has also played a key role in developing new treatments for these diseases.

Anka Fauer is widely recognised as one of the leading neurosurgeons in the world and her pioneering work has had a major impact on patient care worldwide. She is currently retired but continues to make significant contributions to neuroscience research through her work at the Salk Institute.

Dr. Anka Fauer’s Career in Neurosurgery

Dr. Anka Fauer is a neurosurgeon who has dedicated her life to advancing neurosurgery and the care of patients. She began her career as a surgical resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD, where she worked on cases of traumatic brain injury. As she continued her training, Dr. Fauer became interested in treating epilepsy and other neurological disorders. She then moved to Stanford University School of Medicine, where she served as the director of the division of neurosurgery and co-director of the Spine Center. In 2007, Dr. Fauer was named chair of the department of neurosurgery at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR.
